Often they are referred to
as instant ancestors, instant relatives, and I've
even seen them labeled as recycled relatives. It is sad,
really. They are the photographs that you see stuffed in huge
boxes and baskets at junk shops and antique stores. Usually they
sell for about a dollar, sometimes more, sometimes less... depending
on the subject.
I ran across my first instant
ancestor around 1995 when I was browsing an antique shop. I saw
a photograph that touched me. I held in my hand a photograph
once cherished and saved by someone, only to be lost or abandoned
years later. The price was right - $1.00. I could not leave it.
It needed a home just like my own treasured family photographs.
This led to what eventually
became a hobby for me... collecting old photographs that speak
to me without saying a word. What started with one photograph
became a folder of photographs. That folder eventually overflowed
and I moved the collection to a box... then a small photo organizer,
and eventually to two large archival photo boxes.
